3 Tips for Choosing Your Perfect Wedding Dress for your wedding dress should be fun and exciting, not stressful. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you decide on the perfect wedding dress.
  • First and foremost you need to decide on the budget for your wedding dress and stick to it! When you make your first exciting trip to the bridal store it can be tempting to try on any and all dresses that catch your eye, even if they are out of your budget.  This is a dangerous game to play. You don’t want to fall in love with a dress that isn’t going to happen, so don’t put yourself in that situation.  You also need to decide if you want to purchase multiple dresses.  Some brides will get one dress for the ceremony and one to change into for the reception. If you decide on multiple dresses, make sure to include them all in your wedding budget.
  • Second, you need to consider the time of year and location of your ceremony.  Will the ceremony be indoor or outdoor?  What is the temperature like that time of year?  Is there a chance of rain or snow?  For example, if you are having a beach wedding I would recommend a lighter material with not too many layers so that you don’t overheat.

  • Third, decide on the style of dress you are interested in.  Do you want a ball gown, A-line, empire waist, short, etc.?  Also, consider the type of neck line you would prefer.  Below is a picture of all the different neckline types. This will help narrow down the selections once you get to the dress store.  Consider your body type and in what you will feel most comfortable.  However, feel free to change your mind.  You might have your heart set on a certain style but once you try it on, you aren’t really feeling it.  That’s ok, just move on to the next style until you find the right fit for you.

Lastly, remember to pick YOUR favorite dress!  It can be distracting when your closest friends and relatives all seem to have an opinion, but remember it’s your day and you need to choose your dream dress.
Happy Shopping!

  2. I'm glad that you put setting the budget first. The process is much harder when you set a budget that is too flexible and start stressing over options that are far more expensive than you're comfortable with. Shopping with a budget actually provides a great constraint that can help you find something more creative than what others may end up with. Thanks for these tips - they are all very good!

  3. Great tip about remembering the location and temperature of the wedding! When my sister was shopping for her dress, she kept gravitating towards ones made of heavier material with a lot of layers. She looked beautiful in them, of course, but she was having an outdoor, summer wedding and she would have been really hot in the midday sun! I think she was happier with her choice of a lighter, breezier gown!

  4. It is good advice to remind the bride that it is her special day! Often times I see brides become so stressed out to please their mother, sister, or whoever they are shopping with. In the end you as the bride need to remember that this day starts and ends with you! Find the dress that you are most comfortable in, mentally and physically.
